When you got married, you likely did not ever see your marriage ending in divorce. But this is the reality for many couples, and ending your marriage can give you a fresh start.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2021 in the U.S., 689,308 couples either got divorced or annulled their marriages. If you have plans to get divorced in the near future, the following are some tips that can help you move forward after this major life event.
Find what makes you happy
When you got married, you may have found that your identity started to merge with your partner. Now that you are single again, rediscover who you are and what makes you happy. Consider trying something new, such as a new hobby or a new hairstyle, and focusing on bringing more happiness to your life.
Focus on basic self-care
On an emotional level, the divorce process can take a lot out of you. Even after you come to a divorce settlement, make self-care a priority, so you can feel your best. Try and exercise regularly, eat a nutritious diet and get enough sleep.
Seek support from several sources
As you work on reinventing yourself, seek support from others. Consider talking to a therapist and joining a support group for the newly divorced, in addition to leaning on your family and friends for help and support.
It can take time to feel like you have moved on from the divorce process. Give yourself patience at this time and try to be positive about what lies ahead in your life.
