3 tips for managing your emotions during a divorce

Divorce is by its very nature an emotional experience. However, letting your emotions get the best of you as you go through the process can lead to poor decisions and errors that can impact your long-term future.

Although it is challenging to keep your emotions in check in a situation that is so fraught, it is critical to your well-being. Here are three simple tips that can help you manage your emotions during a separation and divorce.

1. Have a big-picture outlook

A divorce provokes intense responses that make your world seem like all that matters is what is happening in the short-term, right now. However, one way to help you keep your emotions in perspective is by taking a long-term view of your life and your future. It can be difficult to imagine a future where this situation is far behind you, but it does exist. Focus on how you want your life to look a year from now, five years from now, even 10 years from now. Projecting your vision from the immediate situation into the future can take the emotional impact out of what is happening now.

2. Research and get information

Do not proceed in your divorce based on hearsay or what your friends tell you.
