3 tips for coping successfully with life after divorce

A divorce is one of the most emotional events you will ever experience. You exist day by day until the divorce is final—and after that comes the rest of your life.

Whether you feel relief that the marriage is behind you or fear as you face the unknown, here are three tips to help you begin the new chapter in your life.

1. Seek support

As a newly divorced person, you will likely feel at loose ends. After all, you were used to being part of a couple. Consider a support network to help you acclimate to single life. At first, it may just be one person, perhaps a good friend who will listen when you want to talk, join you for a long lunch or accompany you to a Saturday matinee. You may also think about joining a support group in your area.

2. Create a new you

Perhaps as a spouse and a parent, the needs of your family took up most of your time. This is your chance to find out who you are. You can redefine yourself and spread your wings. Take up a new hobby. Audit a class or two at your local college. If you need to go back to work, you now have the opportunity to pursue the kind of job you would really enjoy.

3. Lessen the impact on your children

If you have children, their well-being following the divorce is your first priority. You want them to adjust as smoothly as possible to a new kind of life spending time with either one parent or the other. Minimize the impact of the family breakup. Be respectful in speaking of—and to—the other parent. Avoid post-divorce bitterness and criticism in front of your children. Be a positive role model and help your children adjust in the best way possible.
