Dispelling 3 divorce myths

On Behalf of | Mar 5, 2018 | Divorce

If you are heading for your first divorce, the realities of ending your marriage may be new and surprising to you. This foreign process may lead you to ask friends and family about divorce or even search for tips online. When this happens, you can expect much of the information you get to be wrong or misleading.

Buying into divorce myths may cause you to make decisions that will end up hurting you. This is why you should talk to a divorce attorney to inform you about the process. Here are three myths about divorce you should not believe.

1. Moms always get custody

While mothers may have disproportionately received primary custody historically, this is not so true today. Due to the evolution of divorce laws, both parents have an equal opportunity at being custodial. When the court decides on custody and visitation matters, it will consider what will be best for the stability, health and overall well-being of your child. The decision will not have anything to do with the gender of the parent.

2. Wives always get support

Similarly, you may falsely believe that woman will always get spousal support and husbands never do. However, spousal maintenance is based on the economic situations of each spouse, not gender. Do not expect alimony to be determined based on whether you are a man or woman.

3. Divorce means failure

You may fall into the trap of believing that you are a failure because you are dissolving your marriage. However, this is one of the most common falsehoods about divorce. Sometimes it just does not work out. You may very well go on to live a happier and healthier life after divorce.

Divorce can be a frightening and intimidating experience, especially the first time around. However, you do not need to believe damaging myths. Learn the truth about divorce by consulting with a family law attorney.
