Top 3 tips for helping your children cope with divorce

On Behalf of | Aug 9, 2017 | Child Custody

It is no shock that your divorce is going to be difficult for your children. This is never an easy thing to discuss or experience. When children see their parents fight and separate, it affects them deeply. While this is unavoidable, there are things you can do to help your kids through this hard time.

Helping your kids cope with the stress and confusion of divorce is key to maintaining a strong relationship with them. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

1. Make sure your children know you love them

Sometimes children blame themselves for the divorce. Other times, children might feel betrayed by their parents. Whatever the case is, make sure you offer consistent reassurance. While this might not immediately take the pain away, it will give your children a sense of security and love.

2. Do not sugarcoat it

You might not want to break all the bad news, but it is necessary. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is best to tell the truth. However, make sure you stay away from the nasty details. You do not need to tell your children about the specific reasons or worst arguments you had. If you speak honestly upfront, no matter how difficult, your children will be more likely to trust you.

3. Encourage communication

Communication among everyone is key to making the most out of your custody arrangement or visitation schedule. Let your children vent to you. Encourage them to have a healthy relationship with the other parent. This will give your children a sense of empowerment in a situation that can leave them feeling helpless.

Divorce is messy, confusing and will greatly impact your kids. There is no question about it. While the divorce and emotional pain may be inevitable, you can still take some steps to ensure your children feel loved. You and your children can make it through this.
