When are divorces most common?

On Behalf of | Nov 6, 2016 | Divorce

Surprisingly, according to a recent study, divorces are most common at the end of Spring and the end of Summer. The study, out of the University of Washington, found that divorce filings peak in March and August. The study concluded after a 14-year exhaustive review of divorce filings.

The researchers posit that people tend to confront holidays and vacations with greater optimism. Unfortunately, when these vacations do not live up to these unrealistic hopes, people become disillusioned with their relationships and are more likely to file for divorce.

The study found that divorce filings went up around 33 percent between December and March. For example, in one county, there were 430 filings in December and 520 filings in March. Furthermore, the researchers figured that even if someone decided to file during the holidays, they would need a few months to get their finances in order, find a lawyer, and get ready before filing for divorce. Some people probably need the time to work up the courage to take the final leap.

The peak in August, the researchers guess, occurs after summer vacations and before the children go to school. The researcher noted the same pattern across all counties in the state.

Ending a marriage is a huge, life-changing decision. It is important you do not undertake divorce lightly. If you believe a divorce is a viable option, you may want to consult with a family law attorney to review the legal issues and other consequences of a divorce. When you file for divorce, you cannot have any regrets about the decision. A lawyer can help you focus so that you make the best decision for you and your family.
