Study finds higher rates of adoption among transgender children

The transgender community has been under the microscope in the past few years from bathroom concerns to privacy rights. North Carolina is currently engaged in a dispute with the Federal government regarding its bathroom policy. But while the controversies are brewing, a study found that transgender children are being adopted at higher rates than before. This post will go over the study and its implication for adoption policy.

Doctors at the Boston Children’s Hospital found that 8.2 percent of the young people in the clinic were adopted, as compared to 2.3 percent for the entire state. Moreover, doctors from many youth and gender clinics are reporting high rates of adoption for their transgender patients.

The researchers offer several explanations. First, adopted children are overrepresented in clinical studies. Adopted children come from difficult backgrounds and are more likely to participate in these studies.

One of the lead researchers suggests that families who adopt children are more open-minded to adopting children of any identity. Adoptive parents may just care less about possible cultural stigmas. One of the researchers concurred because, in biological families, there tends to be a blame game. Adoptive parents usually abandon that practice. Moreover, adopted children have an easier time being “different” from their parents. Adoptive children intuitively understand they are different and so are more comfortable being different from their family.

If you are considering adopting a child, you may want to call a lawyer and go over the process. Adopting a child is a complicated legal process. The last thing you want to do is undertake this process without fully understanding it. A single mistake could delay your application for months. A lawyer can help you comply with all of the regulations and ensure that your adoption application is approved as soon as possible.
