How do you stop fighting post-divorce?

Divorce, unfortunately, is rarely ever the end it is billed. You are often required to interact with your ex-spouse on a variety of occasions, especially if you are co-parenting a child. These continued interactions raise an interesting issue; if you were fighting when you were married, how do you stop the fighting now that you’re divorced?

A common technique is to incorporate post-divorce conflict resolution mechanisms. You can make these complex or basic. Many divorce agreements include some provisions for mediation or arbitration. Sometimes the intervention of a neutral third party can bring you together. Other arrangements include mandatory “cooling off” periods.

After exhausting the conflict dispute mechanisms, then you may want to consider seeking redress in the court system. A lawyer can go over your issue and help you determine if the courts are the best option or if there an alternative forum in which you may avail yourself.

If you believe that you are unable to resolve the differences with your spouse out of the courtroom, then you may want to speak with a lawyer. You don’t want to risk your right to a post-divorce modification because you procrastinated on enforcing your rights. While it is ideal for you and your spouse to work out your differences outside the legal system, it isn’t always viable. Keeping a lawyer on your side is a good way to ensure that you are covered in case issues arise.
