Don McLean divorces after 30 years

On Behalf of | Jun 26, 2016 | Divorce

Don McLean, the singer songwriter famous for the song ‘American Pie’, and his wife after 30 years have finalized their divorce. The divorce comes on the heels of a very rocky past few years. McLean was arrested for allegedly being involved in domestic violence with his former spouse.

His former spouse filed for divorce in March and cited several serious allegations, specifically alleging “adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences.” Events leading up to the divorce became public news after the singer was arrested on domestic violence charges. For his part, Mr. McClean maintained that no abuse actually occured and stated as such on his Facebook page.

In finalizing the divorce, Mr. McLean opted to disregard the terms of a prenuptial agreement and agreed to settle the divorce from his former spouse for $10 million. As part of the divorce, he is prohibited from contacting his former spouse.

Most divorces do not end quite so publicly or tragically however any 30 year-long marriage is going to be complicated. Thirty years is a long time to build a life together and even harder to disentangle.

Thankfully most marriages do not fall under the same scrutiny as Don McLean’s however any marriage that lasts 30 years will be complicated. An attorney is a good person to have on your side to minimize the fallout from the end of a marriage and to smooth the process as much as possible, especially in cases involving many different assets. Divorce is hard on everyone, friends and family. An attorney allows you to take a step back from the divorce while the attorney handles the daily grind.
