Paternity action establishes fatherhood for NBA player

On Behalf of | Dec 13, 2015 | Paternity

In general, there are two reasons for a man to get a DNA test to prove if he is the father of a child. One reason is that the man does not believe he is the child’s father and thus should not be held financially responsible for the child’s expenses. The other reason is because the father believes he is the child’s biological father and wants to have father’s rights and a relationship with the child.

Earlier this year, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving demanded that he be issued a paternity test, claiming that he was the father of the unborn child of Texas beauty queen Andrea Wilson. The paternity test revealed that Irving was indeed the unborn child’s father. And recently, Irving and Wilson welcomed a daughter, Azurie Elizabeth Irving, into the world.

This move to establish paternity grants little Azurie with rights and protections that she would not have had otherwise. In addition to being Azurie’s biological father, Irving is now also her legal father. This means that Kyrie Irving now has certain parenting rights and responsibilities that help ensure he will play an important role in his daughter’s life.

It is typically in the best interests of a child to have a strong relationship with both parents. But sometimes parenting situations can become complicated. And when the parents are not living together, it can be a challenge for a man to establish his right to spend time with his child. This can be especially true when there is a question of paternity.

But for men who want to be a part of their children’s lives, establishing paternity does more than provide a name for the child’s birth certificate; it can create avenues to the child’s growth and development that otherwise may not have existed.

If you’re considering establishing or seeking paternity in Texas, a consultation with an experienced family lawyer can further explain the process and the potential benefits to a child.
