Women’s illness leads to divorce more often in Texas

On Behalf of | Mar 16, 2015 | Divorce

According to research published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior in March, divorce is more likely to happen if the woman involved gets sick. In other words, if a man gets sick divorce is less likely to occur than if a woman gets sick.

Ending your marriage is tough in Texas under any circumstances. If your wife suddenly gets seriously ill, there is a good chance one of you will be thinking of a divorce. The study found that a separation is six percent more likely to happen if the wife in the relationship falls gravely ill than if she had been able to maintain her health.

When the man, or husband, in the relationship became ill, there was no greater chance of a divorce, according to the study.

The research, led by Iowa State University, entailed monitoring approximately 2,701 marriages over a 20 year period. The only real stipulation was that one of the members in the marriage had to be at least 51 years old.

Overall, at the end of the two decades, 32 percent of all the marriages being monitored ended in divorce. 24 percent saw one of the participants in each partnership passing away and leaving one of the members a widow or widower.

A serious toll is taken when the wife in the marriage falls gravely ill.

It was further disclosed that the reason behind a serious female illness was the cost factor. Finances began to fall apart and the marriage just could not survive the hardship.

Another factor that came up was that the sick women were unhappy with the level of care being given by the husband in the marriage. It may sound sexist but the study shows that men have not been socialized to be the best caregivers, while women have.

If you are contemplating a divorce for any reason, you may want to contact a legal professional who knows the laws of Texas and can look out for your best interests.
