Film ‘Philomena’ raises critical child custosy concerns

On Behalf of | Jan 25, 2014 | Child Custody

If a child is torn apart by bitter strife and arguing between his or her mother and father leading up to and during a divorce, one parent is likely to lose. If alienating behavior is proven in court, a competent judge needs to enforce interventions that protect the parent being maligned.

Statistically, there are over 1,250,000 divorces each year in America and over a million kids are affected. Around 40 percent of kids who attend public school are being raised in single-parent households. Two to four percent of public school kids are treated with drugs that modify their behavior, according to the January 2004 issue of New York University’s Child Study Center Report. This needs to be addressed and should not be ignored.

Much needs to be done in the court system to help parents in the endeavor to help their kids manage the divorce that threatens to tear them apart. Many children would benefit if the court system acknowledged that the system is broken and that children would actually benefit from two healthy parents who have divorced and are both loving and nurturing. Too many systems, both private and public, are not interested in this. They are not interested in protecting the kids, although a few are. Those few make counseling, visitation, support and child custody their issue.

Philomena was real. So is the reality that some children must do without one parent because of bitter strife and poor judgment. If you find yourself separated from your children because of divorce, you need to contact a competent lawyer who isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions of your ex-spouse. He or she will be able to assist you and get you the custody you deserve.
