Can I find a fulfilling relationship after my divorce?

On Behalf of | Jan 16, 2013 | Divorce

Often, we post on this blog on topics relating to effectively interacting with an ex-spouse after a divorce, what to expect during the divorce process and issues of a similar nature. But what about when a divorce is finalized? With the rate of marriages that end in divorce in Texas and across the rest of the nation consistently reaching as high as 50 percent, the odds are that if an individual is looking to date post-divorce, he or she will likely date someone else that has also been divorced.

Some of these potential suitors may even have been divorced multiple times. When should an individual be concerned that the person they are dating has been divorced too many times?

Well, certainly every situation is different. According to some relationship experts, the biggest indicator that an individual with multiple divorces is not a wise courting option is usually when the individual refuses to accept any responsibility in any of the divorces or past relationships.

Many therapists suggest that it is important for an individual to be able to identify reasons that they may have played at least some part in the end of previous relationships. Be that difficulty remaining monogamous, communication issues, repeatedly marrying individuals that are not a compatible fit or a million other possibilities. Certainly, every marriage is comprised of unique individuals and circumstances so it is impossible to make sweeping generalizations about divorce or individuals that have experienced multiple divorces.

An important point to emphasize is that simply because an individual has more than one divorce does not mean that they are incapable of having a successful relationship. Reason for pause and further consideration would be more beneficial if the individual is unable to emotionally engage, is quick to pass blame and reluctant to be honest. But those issues could be indicative of future discord with any couple. Many individuals will go on to have successful relationships after a divorce.
