Thousands of Texas women left without health insurance post-divorce

On Behalf of | Nov 15, 2012 | Divorce

Whether a divorce in Houston is contentious or relatively amicable, the issues at the forefront of most divorcing individuals’ minds are child custody and property division. Ho often will I see my children? Who will get custody? Will I get to keep the house? How will I budget for this new single life?

These are very important issues to consider in seeking a divorce, because the fact of the matter is that it is nearly impossible to maintain the same rhythms after a divorce. When each of the questions above is picked apart further, there tend to be issues that individuals didn’t anticipate being an outcome of divorce.

One such issue is loss of health insurance. Houston women that are covered as a dependent under their husband’s health insurance are largely at risk for being left without coverage after a divorce. In fact, a study recently issued by University of Michigan estimates that there are around 115,000 women around the country that lose private health insurance coverage annually due to a divorce.

Of that estimated 115,000 women, some can still maintain coverage under public programs or through their own employer, but 65,000 women each year are left uninsured in the wake of a divorce. Being left without health care coverage can be a daunting feel. What if the woman gets sick? What if the woman gets injured?

While divorce can be a new beginning, it can have a bumpy start. It is important to consider all of the seemingly smaller details as well when divorcing in Texas. An experienced family law attorney can guide an individual by showing them what to expect, how to be prepared and how to fight for the best outcome in the divorce.
