Gibson’s in the news again, this time for helping his father

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2012 | Divorce

Legendary actor Mel Gibson is no stranger to the news. He’s been used to the spotlight for decades but has become accustomed to the limelight within the past few years. From his traffic stop involving anti-Semitic comments to his recent, acrimonious breakup from girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, Gibson has earned himself a less-than-desirable reputation.

Now, Gibson is in the news again, and this time he’s not the bad guy. TMZ reports that Gibson’s elderly father wants to divorce his current wife. So far, based on reports, the “bad guy” in this legal situation is the father’s estranged wife. She’s being accused of abuse.

Gibson’s father is 93 years old, while his second (current) wife is in her 70s. He’s accusing his wife of withholding medications he needs to live a life of quality. Her excuse for supposedly withholding the drugs is that the medicine prolongs her husband’s suffering. If her husband wants and is prescribed medication, however, he has the right to take it and live his life the way he sees fit.

Some might wonder why an elderly person would seek a divorce so late in his life. It is never too late in life to try to be happy. And in this case, Gibson’s father isn’t just seeking happiness; he is also seeking better health, assuming that it’s true that his wife is guilty of elder abuse.

Perhaps Gibson’s role in helping with this divorce will do more than create a safer environment for his father. It could help restore his tarnished reputation.
