How to tell if your husband is planning a divorce

You know your marriage is on the rocks, but perhaps you are not ready to give up yet. How do you know if you should still keep fighting or if you should start calling a lawyer for advice? That depends on how your husband feels.

Whether or not your marriage still has a chance will determine your next move. Here are a few signs that your husband is planning on divorce, and so should you.

No communication

Although lack of communication may be what contributed to the end of your relationship, further changes may signal that it is truly over. Examples include:

  • Avoiding conflict/stonewalling
  • Withholding important information from you
  • Not conversing with you on a daily basis
  • Ignoring your attempts at communication
  • Being cruel to prevent you from trying to communicate
  • Refusing to go to marriage counseling

These behaviors usually reveal that your husband has stopped caring and is therefore unwilling to put any more emotional investment into something he believes is hopeless.

Hidden assets

One of the most common red flags a divorce is imminent is your husband hiding assets to protect them from the property division part of divorce. You may notice new bank statements in the mail or old ones no longer coming. You may not be able to log in to online accounts. Your husband may lie about income and taxes, pay friends, move accounts and sell valuable items, among other suspicious activities.

Change of focus

Is your husband spending more time away from home than normal? Has he put more of himself into his business, friendships, hobbies or children? Has he started caring more about his appearance or changed his looks significantly? Does he no longer show any interest in intimacy with you? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your husband may be gearing up for a divorce. This may be an unpleasant reality to face, but if you take proper and quick action, you can prepare and protect yourself instead of feeling blindsided.
