A comparison of Texas divorces with the country

Similar to their political views, the state of marriage across the states varies wildly. Marriage and divorce are informed by personal decisions, economic reality and culture. These variations illustrate the differences and the similarities between the states. The study of marriage and divorce was conducted by the Pew Research Center. This post will break down some of these numbers.

People tend to extrapolate meaning from numbers without understanding context. For example, Texas has the highest number of thrice-married individuals; about 428,000 women and 373,000 men. Does this indicate that Texans divorce and remarry more than other states? Not necessarily, because you also need to control for the size of Texas.

Texas is the second largest state by population after California; therefore it is understandable that its numbers are higher than other states. If you compare the rate of thrice-married couples, then it would mean about six percent of Texans who ever married are thrice married. That is in line with the national average of five percent and significantly below the leaders.

About 10 percent of the married populations in Arkansas and Oklahoma are thrice married. Moreover, these numbers are significantly lower than East Coast states such as New York and Massachusetts, in which only two percent of their married populations are thrice married.

If you are thinking about filing for a divorce, then you may want to speak with a family law attorney. Every divorce is unique and represents something different for every person. An experienced lawyer will know how to approach your divorce and how to guide you through the process. Hardly anyone is ever prepared for the financial and emotional issues that come up during a divorce. An attorney is a good person to have on your side to watch your back.
