What is the best way to inform friends and family of my divorce?

On Behalf of | Apr 17, 2013 | Divorce

There are a lot of uncomfortable challenges that can come with divorce that extend beyond the legal issues around ending a marriage. A significant stressor for many people is once children, family and close friends know about the spilt, what is the best way to inform everyone else?

Some divorcing individuals are turning to Facebook and other related outlets to share the news. Actress Jacqueline Buckingham decided to announce her divorce from her husband by tweeting, Facebooking and blogging on the decision. Many have called the move tactless, but Buckingham defends, “Divorce in our culture usually connotes failure and shame. And I believe it to be a worthy mission to disavow that negativity. When something like this happens, generally, people don’t know how to react. In sharing our news together, we sought to communicate clearly with the people in our lives.”

In several posts, we have discussed the manner in which Facebook and other social media platforms are increasingly playing a significant role in family law proceedings. There have been instances of dating profiles cited in divorce proceedings, and Facebook pictures used to nab parents looking to dodge child support payments. However, there has been less discussion around whether or not social media can be used as a tool for announcing a divorce.

There are no guidelines around the best manner for an individual to inform their extended circle of acquaintances about their divorce. Whatever manner an individual in Texas chooses to announce a divorce, it is still critical to bear in mind that content posted on social media outlets could be used in a family law court.

An experienced family law attorney can help an individual work out all the legal ramifications of a divorce — including property division, child custody and spousal support — while the individual focuses on starting their new life.
